The ENgage Tasks: Task 1: Dune (2021) Who or what appears the most: Protagonist- Paul, Desert landscape, military base, Main characters depicted: Paul – White young man, Looks good and respectable. Chani – Tanned young woman, slightly mysterious, not as well dressed When and Where: Set on planet Arrakis, Year seems to be in the future. Target Audience: Young people (16-35), Men, Living in developed countries. What happens: A war is fought on planet and Chani calls to Paul to defend the planet, he hears her talking to him in a dream and ends up seeing her on Arrakis. Genre: Adventure, Sci-Fi, Drama Themes: Conflict, Mystery, Love 150 Word Summary: Dune is an Adventure & Sci-Fi film adapted from Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel originally written in 1965, is set far in the future, and is centered around a young respectable looking man called Paul Atreides, who is the son of a noble family. He is concerned when a Young Girl called Chani comes to him in a dream pleading for him to defend her home planet, Arrakis from the violence and conflict that occurs there. Militant forces make their way onto planet Arrakis to fight over the most valuable resource in existence – The spice Melange, which extends human life expectancy and accelerates levels of thought. While on Planet Arrakis, he sees Chani in person, they interact a lot on Arrakis and end up falling in love, but he’s caught up in fighting the war as the fate of him and his family depend on protecting Melange to secure their longevity. Task 2: Audio Programmer (Games) Daily tasks: Write the script that determines functions (such as volume ETC.) and triggers sounds when certain players actions are made. Required Skills: Maths, Physics, Programming, Music Tech, Innovation, Communication, Knowledge of gaming platforms & game engines. Route to job: 2 years’ experience in the industry, Recommended: Maths, Music, Physics, Computer science A Levels. Technical Manager (Unscripted TV) Daily tasks: Liaise with production team to find out what’s required and offer technical advice, network with equipment suppliers for testing and checking before use, Manage the crew’s chemistry & working hours, Ensure the safety and security of equipment, Required Skills: Electronic engineering, Communication, Problem Solving, Planning, Health & Safety Route to job: Senior role so experience is essential. Start as kit room assistant or technical assistant and gain experience with managing equipment. Work up to vision guarantee and then technical manager. Music Editor (Film & TV drama) Daily tasks: Varies depending on production. For example, on a medium-budget film: Work starts while film is being edited. Work with director to establish the music’s purpose, style, Spotting (What points in the movie require music), Develop temporary score. Then, work with composer who use the temp score as a template, act as a bridge between sound and picture teams. Attend recording sessions, help with revisions, and design a click track to synchronise the audio with the visuals. Work with a specialist mixer to create several mixes and lay tracks down to fit the visuals for the final mix. Prepare a cue sheet which breaks down all music featured on the soundtrack. Required Skills: Music, understanding of film production, Collaboration, Using Software, Business & Networking. Route to job: Graduate in sound tech or music tech, Start in post-production sound department as runner, train as assistant, progress to re-recording mixer or sound editor.
